EcoLogo is North America’s most widely recognized and respected certification of environmental leadership. By setting standards and certifying products in more than 120 categories, EcoLogo helps identify, trust, buy, and sell environmentally preferable “green” goods and services. There are presently over 7,000 EcoLogo-certified products from hundreds of manufacturers.

Launched by the Canadian federal government in 1988, EcoLogo has grown to serve buyers and sellers of green products throughout the United States and Canada, and around the world. In fact, EcoLogo is North America’s oldest environmental standard and certification organization (and the second oldest in the world). It is the only North American standard accredited by the Global Ecolabelling Network as meeting the international ISO 14024 standards for environmental labels. The EcoLogo program is managed by TerraChoice Environmental Marketing, Inc.

An ecolabel identifies products that have been measured and certified against established environmental leadership criteria. Ecolabelling helps individuals, corporations and governments make informed purchasing choices that reduce their ecological footprint. Companies whose products and services have been certified by various ecolabelling
programs are considered as being less harmful to the environment while still meeting or exceeding applicable safety or performance standards. Here are some of the standards presently in effect in North America and elsewhere around the world. You will also find other standards that are of interest to the JanSan industry.

This is a certification adopted by Innu-Science to specify that its sustainable development formulations are composed of restricted, highly controlled, and stringently selected items. Soft chemical ingredients are introduced but at such low concentrations that no significant cleaning activity occurs from their presence. The cleaning activity of the formulation comes from its biotechnological components. All biological agents used in our formulations are produced according to Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) guidelines and exceed the criteria of all other known certifying bodies.

European Union

The EU Eco-label is managed by the European Eco-labelling Board (EUEB) and receives the support of the European Commission, all Member States of the European Union and the European Economic Area (EEA). The Eco-labelling Board includes representatives of various groups such as industry, environment protection and consumer organizations. The EU eco-labelling program was launched throughout the European Community in 1993 to encourage the manufacture of less environmentally-damaging products. The European Union’s Eco-label, a flower with the EU’s star symbol, is awarded to products that have passed a life cycle analysis.

Eco Mark

Since 1989, the Japanese Environmental Association has managed the Eco Mark Program with the goal of disseminating environmental information on products and encouraging consumers to choose environmentally-sound products. The symbol itself represents the desire to protect the earth with our own hands, using the phrase «Friendly to the Earth» at the top of the symbol and the product category below it.

This goal will be accomplished by authorizing the Eco Mark to be displayed on products that reduce the environmental load caused by every-day activities, thereby contributing to the preservation of the environment. The Eco Mark Program is intended as a means of offering a choice of products with a lower environmental impact; however this does not necessarily lead to an environmentally-sound society.
